location:
Groundhog Mine, Vanadium, Grant Co., New Mexico, USA
description: Located near Vanadium in the historic Central Mining District of Grant County, New Mexico, the Groundhog Mine is situated within complex hydrothermal lead-zinc-copper deposits hosted in Paleozoic sedimentary rocks and Tertiary intrusive porphyries. Discovered in the late 1800s and actively mined through much of the twentieth century, the locality became famous for its rich yield of base metal ores as well as exceptional mineral specimens. Collectors highly value vintage specimens from the Groundhog Mine, particularly its distinctive, well-crystallized galena, sphalerite, pyrite, quartz, and lustrous chalcopyrite formations.
