Quartz
specimen number:
2063379
location:
Cascabel mine, Socorro Co., New Mexico, USA
description: Located in the Ladron Mountains Mining District of Socorro County, New Mexico, the Cascabel Mine is situated in a geologically complex area influenced by faulting and hydrothermal fluids associated with the Rio Grande Rift. Mineralization at the site formed within open fractures and fault zones in Precambrian and Paleozoic host rocks. Though historic prospecting in the surrounding district began in the late 19th century primarily for lead, silver, and copper, the Cascabel Mine itself remained a relatively small operation. In mineral collecting circles, the locality is noted for yielding fluorite along with notable specimens of quartz variety amethyst, hematite, and goethite.
A loose glassy translucent deep purple sharp crystal of quartz, this the variety called amethyst. In great condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
