Quartz
specimen number:
2062941
location:
Hot Springs area, Arkansas, USA
description: The quartz deposits of the Ouachita Mountains near Hot Springs formed hundreds of millions of years ago when silica rich hydrothermal fluids circulated through fractures in ancient folded sedimentary rocks, slowly cooling to deposit exceptionally clear crystals within open pockets. Native peoples utilized these abundant local minerals for stone tools long before European arrival, while systematic mining and collecting accelerated significantly by the late nineteenth century as health tourists visiting the thermal springs sought out the specimens. Commercial operations expanded further during the twentieth century, particularly to supply specialized industrial grade material during wartime, cementing the region's status as a premier destination for both mineral collectors and commercial quartz mines.
A glassy sharp gem quality single crystal of quartz. Naturally terminated on both ends, in super condition. This exhibits a trigonal pyramid face. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 5.5 x 2.3 x 1.7 cm (miniature)
