location:
Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada
description: The amethyst deposits near Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, formed within ancient fault zones and rock fractures where hot mineral-rich solutions deposited purple quartz. While local prospectors and rock collectors first discovered these striking purple crystals in the early to mid-20th century, commercial mining and popular public-access sites developed significantly during the 1960s. Today, the region remains famous for its open-pit operations, such as Amethyst Mine Panorama, which attract rockhounds from around the world to collect specimens known for their deep purple hues and distinctive red hematite inclusions.
Deep red crystals of quartz across the top of matrix. The underlying color is purple, the deep red color is due to the presence of hematite. The specimen comes with a previous collection label from Ray DeMark. This is in very good condition.
Size: 6.0 x 4.5 x 3.0 cm (small-cabinet)
