location:
Murzinka Mine, Prigorodny, Sverdlovsk, Russia
description: The geology of the Murzinka region in the Middle Urals is characterized by extensive granite massifs hosting complex late-stage pegmatite veins enriched in rare elements, fluorine, and beryllium, which gave rise to world-famous deposits of pale blue topaz, aquamarine, and smoky quartz. Mining history in the area dates back to the 17th and 18th centuries following early local settlements and discoveries, evolving into a celebrated historic gemstone-mining district where manual pits and shallow underground workings were systematically developed to extract prized ornamental and lapidary minerals for Russian and international collections.
Attractive glassy partly gemmy crystals of quartz, this the purple variety known as amethyst, measuring 4.0 cm in size and set nicely up on matrix. This is in good condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
