A loose gemmy grouping of double terminated mostly smoky quartz crystals. This is in the style of what many call a Herkimer diamond, yet it comes from Ontario. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark. another label is present as well from the A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum at Michigan Tech University. In great condition.

Greely, located in Carleton County (now part of Ottawa, Ontario), was originally settled in the mid-19th century as a rural farming community. Geologically, the area is best known for local quarries, such as the Grant Quarry, situated within the Paleozoic Beekmantown Group. This regional rock formation consists largely of dolostone and limestone, featuring cavities and vugs that yield exceptional, highly lustrous, Herkimer-style quartz crystals. Among these mineral occurrences, local pockets produce prized smoky quartz specimens, which acquire their characteristic translucent brown-to-grey coloration from natural irradiation acting on impurities within the crystal lattice.
