Lake Superior agates formed approximately 1.1 billion years ago when volcanic activity created gas cavities in basaltic lava flows, which were subsequently filled by silica-rich fluids to create their signature colorful, concentric bands. Millions of years later, during the Pleistocene ice ages, advancing glaciers eroded these host rocks and widely scattered the durable agates across Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Michigan, where rock collectors discover them today.
