Piedra Parada is a small settlement and mining locality situated within the Tatatila Municipality in the mountainous central region of Veracruz, Mexico. While artisanal and small-scale mineral collecting in the region has occurred intermittently for decades (often broadly marketed under the nearby classic name Las Vigas), specific localized pockets—particularly famous for world-class, highly lustrous amethyst, quartz, and associated skarn-related garnet specimens—have been worked by local prospectors on an ongoing, sporadic basis rather than adhering to a formal commercial mine timeline with fixed opening and closing dates. Geologically, the area is defined by complex volcanic and intrusive activity associated with the Serdán-Oriental basin and the eastern Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. The mineral deposits occur largely within vesicular andesitic host rocks, volcanic vugs, and hydrothermal skarn zones formed at the contact between intrusive rocks and carbonate sequences, which facilitate the growth of exceptional quartz variations, calcites, zeolites, and andradite garnets.
