Pyromorphite

specimen number:
2102277

location:
Wheatley Mine, Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, USA

description:

Classic old specimen from Pennsylvania with lustrous green crystals of pyromorphite measuring to 0.4 cm in size on matrix. Good miniature, some damage is present. I think in good condition for this old classic. Collected in the 19th century.

The Wheatley Mine, located in the Phoenixville mining district of Chester County, Pennsylvania, is legendary for its spectacular secondary lead minerals. Geologically, the mine exploited a hydrothermal vein system hosted within Precambrian gneiss and Triassic sedimentary rocks, where lead-zinc-copper ores were deposited along the Schuylkill Fault zone. The site is most famous for its world-class pyromorphite specimens, which are celebrated for their vibrant grass-green to yellow-green color, lustrous barrel-shaped crystals, and complex cavernous habits. Historically, the mine was opened in 1851 by Charles M. Wheatley and saw its most productive period between 1851 and 1858, during which it yielded thousands of tons of lead and silver ore. Although the mine faced challenges with water flooding and eventually closed in the late 19th century after several brief attempts at revival, it remains one of the most important mineral localities in the United States, having produced specimens that are now centerpiece attractions in major museum collections globally.
