Pyromorphite
specimen number:
2062878
location:
Friedrichssegen Mine, Lahnstein, Rheinland-Palatinate, Germany
description: The Friedrichssegen Mine near Lahnstein, Germany, is situated in a complex geological setting along the Lahn River valley, characterized by Paleozoic slates and quartzites hosting hydrothermal veins rich in metallic ores. Mining operations at the site date back centuries, transitioning from medieval silver and lead extraction to intensive industrial exploitation during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries before closing permanently. Historically, the oxidation zones of these ore veins yielded world-class mineral specimens, most notably vibrant green and brown crystals of pyromorphite, which formed through the secondary alteration of primary lead minerals and remain highly prized by international collectors today.
Lustrous brown crystals of pyromorphite to 0.6 cm in length across the top of this matrix. In good condition. Choice old time specimen that comes with several previous labels. One is from the collection of Ray DeMark. The other comes from the A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum and is ex L. L. Hubbard collection.
Size: 8.0 x 5.0 x 4.0 cm (small-cabinet)
