location:
Iron Monarch Mine, Iron Knob, South Australia, Australia
description: The Iron Monarch Mine, located at Iron Knob in South Australia, is a world-famous open-cut iron ore deposit situated in Precambrian metasedimentary Rocks of the Middleback Ranges. Mining began in the late nineteenth century to supply flux for smelting before becoming Australia's foundational source of industrial iron ore for steel production throughout the twentieth century. Beyond its major industrial history, the mine is celebrated by mineral collectors as a prolific locality for rare secondary minerals formed through intense alteration and oxidation, producing exceptional specimens of phosphates, oxides, and carbonates such as gatehouseite, frondelite, and manganoan calcite.
The top of this matrix is covered by glistening black needle like crystals of pyrolusite measuring to 0.2 cm in size. In great condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Eric Laskowski.
