Pyrite (SUL-0044)

specimen number:
9273174

location:
Borieva Mine, Madan, Smolyon, Bulgaria

description:

Bright lustrous cluster of golden pyrite crystals. In good condition. Complete all around with no points of attachment.

The Borieva mine, located near the town of Madan within the Central Rhodope Mountains of southern Bulgaria, is a major component of the prolific Madan lead-zinc ore field. Geologically, the deposit is hosted within a metamorphic core complex composed of Precambrian to Paleogene gneisses, amphibolites, and marbles that were subjected to late-stage Oligocene tectonic extension. Hydrothermal fluids circulating through steeply dipping fault zones interacted with the carbonate host rocks to produce early manganoan skarns, followed by the deposition of vast quartz-sulfide veins rich in galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and pyrite. While primitive, non-industrial mining targeting lead and silver dates back to ancient Thracian and Roman times, modern industrial operations expanded during the 1930s under German capital via the Granitoid company, which built an aerial tramway system connecting the mine to regional transport networks. Following World War II, the property was nationalized and heavily integrated into the Soviet-Bulgarian joint mining enterprise known as GORUBSO starting in the early 1950s, serving as one of the largest and most productive underground base-metal operations in the basin through the late twentieth century, with localized exploration, maintenance, and intermittent extraction activities continuing to expose mineralized zones into the modern era.
