Prehnite on Diopside
specimen number:
2354210
location:
Jeffery Mine, Val-des-Sources, Quebec, Canada
description: Located in Val-des-Sources, Quebec, Canada, the Jeffrey Mine is a historic world-class asbestos and mineral deposit formed within a heavily serpentinized ultramafic intrusive complex enclosed by metasedimentary and volcanic rocks. Decades of large-scale open-pit and underground mining operations, which began in the late 19th century and made the town a major global producer of chrysotile, inadvertently exposed extensive reaction zones and altered rock environments. These unique geological conditions created cavities that hosted a remarkable variety of rare secondary minerals. As a result, the site became world-famous among mineral collectors and museums for yielding pristine, highly sought-after specimens, including exceptional crystals of vesuvianite, grossular, and diopside.
Sharp colorless translucent crystals of prehnite measuring to 1.3 x 0.4 x 0.4 cm in size coming off matrix with needlelike green crystals of diopside. In good condition.
