Prehnite
specimen number:
9892174
location:
Koedoekop, Keetmanshoop Rural, Karas, Namibia
description: The Koedoekop region, situated near Keetmanshoop in the Karas Region of southern Namibia, features geological formations shaped by the igneous activity of the Karoo Supergroup, where intrusive dolerite sills and dykes penetrated surrounding host rocks. Hydrothermal activity associated with these volcanic events led to the precipitation of secondary minerals within vesicles, cavities, and fractures. Mining and specimen collecting at Koedoekop are largely carried out by local small-scale prospectors who recover fine mineral specimens from rugged outcrops and subsurface veins. Prehnite from this locality is widely recognized among mineral collectors for its distinctive translucent pale green to rich olive-green color, often occurring as botryoidal, hemispherical, or aggregates of radiating fan-like crystals. These prehnite specimens are frequently associated with calcite, quartz, and various zeolites, making the locality a noted source for attractive southern African display pieces.
Lustrous light green slightly translucent crystal groupings of prehnite, the largest 3.0 cm in diameter, set attractively up on matrix. This is in great condition.
