Prehnite
specimen number:
2063552
location:
Miki Fjord, Sermersooq, Greenland
description: Good locality example for the species with at least four good crystal groupings of rounded dark green slightly translucent semi lustrous prehnite crystals measuring to 1.0 cm across, these scattered nicely across the top of matrix. In very good condition. The specimen comes with two previous labels, one from the Geological Museum in Copenhagen, the other from the collection of Ray DeMark. Located along the rugged coast of East Greenland within the Sermersooq municipality, Miki Fjord is characterized by extensive Tertiary flood basalts and associated intrusive magmatic systems linked to continental breakup. Geological field studies, notably from the late twentieth century, have mapped the area's complex hydrothermal alteration zones, where circulating hot fluids interacted with the basaltic host rocks. Within these altered dikes, fractures, and cavities, low-temperature metamorphic processes crystallized various secondary minerals, most notably prehnite. While the remote and harsh Arctic environment precludes commercial mining or casual collecting, Miki Fjord remains a globally recognized scientific locality for understanding hydrothermal fluid-rock interactions in basaltic crust.
