Piemontite
specimen number:
2354235
location:
Pilar, Taos Co., New Mexico, USA
description: Located near the Rio Grande gorge in northern New Mexico, the Pilar area exposes ancient Precambrian metamorphic rocks, including parts of the Vadito Group, which underwent intense regional tectonism and hydrothermal alteration. These geological formations are famous among mineral collectors for hosting striking deep red to brownish red crystal specimens of piemontite, a sorosilicate mineral of the epidote group rich in manganese. While not a commercial mining district for industrial metals, the region has long attracted field collectors and researchers seeking distinctive mineral specimens embedded within quartz veins and schistose host rocks along the Pilar Cliffs.
Pinkish red masses and crystalline fairly rich throughout matrix. The specimen comes with a label from the collection of Jack Nieburger, a second label from the company Burminco in Monrovia, California.
