Phoenicochroite
specimen number:
2354246
location:
Evening Star Mine, Maricopa Co., Arizona, USA
description: The Evening Star Mine is typically referenced in historical mining records as a small prospect situated in Arizona (though similarly named historical workings also exist across the state line in California). Geologically, the surrounding region consists of rugged desert terrain featuring Precambrian metamorphic and granitic formations cut by mineralized quartz veins containing sparse base and precious metal occurrences. Mining activity at these localized desert claims was generally limited, consisting mostly of small-scale prospecting and minor exploratory surface or shallow underground workings targeted at strategic metals during periods of wartime demand in the mid-twentieth century.
Lustrous red masses of phoenicochroite on one side of this matrix with cerussite. Choice reference quality example for the species and locality. The specimen comes with a previous label from RW Thomssen.
Size: 4.0 x 3.0 x 2.7 cm (miniature)
