The Nopal No. 1 Mine, located in the Sierra Pena Blanca district of Aldama, Chihuahua, Mexico, was a uranium exploration and mining site active primarily during the 1970s and closed in the early 1980s. Its geology consists of Tertiary rhyolitic ash-flow tuffs and breccia zones overlying older conglomerates and Cretaceous limestone, where hydrothermal fluids and subsequent oxidizing weathering concentrated uranium mineralization. Within this deposit, secondary uranium minerals such as parauranophane, which at one time was called beta-uranophane, formed as yellow crystalline aggregates through the alteration of primary uranium sources.
