Orthoclase with Quartz

specimen number:
2062843

location:
Mt. Antero, Chaffee Co., Colorado, USA

description:
Blocky white crystals of orthoclase to 1.5 cm in size hosting a crystal of smoky quartz. In good condition.

Mount Antero, located in Chaffee County, Colorado, is famous for its high-altitude alpine pegmatites hosted within the Mount Antero granite stock, which formed during the Oligocene epoch. These cavities and vugs contain world-class mineral specimens, most notably fine aquamarine crystals, phenakite, bertrandite, and fluorite. Mining and mineral collecting history here dates back to the late 19th century, driven by prospectors braving harsh, high-elevation conditions above 14,000 feet to extract these prized gemstones and rare-earth minerals.
