Nephrite jade in Monterey County, California, primarily located along the rugged Big Sur coast at Jade Cove, has no single official opening or closing date, as it is a natural geological deposit rather than a commercial mine, though major modern exploration and skin-diving discovery began in the late 1940s and 1950s. Geologically, the nephrite formed through complex metamorphic processes involving serpentinite and hydrothermal fluids associated with the Franciscan Complex, where tectonic subduction zones created the high-pressure, low-temperature conditions necessary for amphibole minerals to transform into dense, tough jade masses. These deposits were subsequently exposed by tectonic activity and shaped by wave erosion along the marine terrace. Today, public collection is permanently regulated rather than closed, permitting recreational hand-tool gathering of loose nephrite below the mean high tide line.
