Mimetite
specimen number:
2063152
location:
Mount Bonnie Mine, Grove Hill, Victoria-Daly, Northern Territory, Australia
description: The Mount Bonnie Mine, located near Grove Hill in the Northern Territory of Australia, is hosted within the Paleoproterozoic Mount Bonnie Formation, consisting of tightly folded interbedded sedimentary and tuffaceous rocks underlain by dolerite sills. The deposit originated as a volcanogenic massive sulfide system later modified by regional metamorphism and deep weathering that formed a rich precious metal oxide cap. Mining history began in the early 20th century with small-scale underground shafts targeting lead, zinc, and silver, followed by extensive modern exploration and open-pit mining operations during the 1970s and 1980s to extract gold and silver from the weathered zone.
An excellent glassy complete crystal of translucent mimetite 1.1 cm across set perfectly on top of matrix. In excellent condition. A choice thumbnail for this Australian classic.
