Microcline with Quartz
specimen number:
2063357
location:
Moat Mtn., Carroll Co., New Hampshire, USA
description: Located in Carroll County, New Hampshire, USA, Moat Mountain is famous for its Jurassic-age White Mountain batholith geology, featuring miarolitic cavities within coarse Conway granite. Active since the nineteenth century, the site became a widely celebrated locality for amateur mineral collectors and mineralogists seeking well-formed crystals of smoky quartz, microcline feldspar, and dark green orthoclase. Managed today as a designated public mineral collecting area within the White Mountain National Forest, the mountain remains a popular destination for finding classic pegmatite pockets and miarolitic cavity specimens.
Nice combination piece for this prevalent locality, the top of this matrix is covered with blocky colorless opaque crystals of microcline to 3.0 cm in length and glassy gemmy smoky quartz crystals to 1.5 cm. This is in good condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark who acquired the piece in 1973.
