Microcline
specimen number:
2062859
location:
The Keyhole Vug, Crystal Peak, Teller Co., Colorado, USA
description: The pegmatites around Crystal Peak, Colorado, formed within the Pikes Peak batholith through late-stage magmatic fluids creating coarse-grained rocks with open miarolitic cavities. Prospectors and mineral collectors have explored these rugged slopes since the 1870s, unearthing world-class specimens of blue-green feldspar and dark quartz. A major milestone in this history occurred in June 1986 with the discovery of the Keyhole Vug, a massive pocket measuring roughly eight by six by two feet that yielded extraordinary museum-quality crystal clusters featuring large twinned feldspar and albite now housed in national institutions.
A grouping of lustrous blue blocky microcline crystals, this the variety often called amazonite. In great condition all around. This would have been collected by Don Smith in June, 1986. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
