Metaautunite
specimen number:
2354121
location:
Triple H & J Mine, Pend Oreille County, Washington, USA
description: Located along the South Fork of Lost Creek in Pend Oreille County, Washington, the Triple H and J Mine (also known as the High Noon Mine) is hosted within Cretaceous-age granite and quartz monzonite belonging to the Kaniksu Batholith. Discovered in late 1957 by three Heikala brothers and an associate named Juntinen, the site was briefly worked as a small-scale underground and open-pit uranium operation during the late 1950s, producing roughly two thousand tons of uranium ore. The locality became renowned among regional mineral collectors for its vibrant radioactive secondary phosphate minerals, notably producing bright yellow-green meta-autunite pseudomorphs formed from the natural dehydration of original autunite crystals found within fractures of the granitic host rock.
Collected by Eric Laskowski, a beautiful miniature specimen with brilliant green lustrous platy yellow green crystals of metaautunite measuring to 0.8 cm in size across a thin matrix. This is in excellent condition and very attractive.
Size: 4.5 x 2.0 x 1.0 cm (miniature)
