Marshallsussmanite
specimen number:
1113597
location:
Wessels Mine, Hotazel, Northern Cape Province, South Africa
description: This is the famous specimen that basically led to the discussion about and then the discovery of the species a few years ago now. There've been several writeups about this, in Rocks and Minerals magazine most notably. Originally thought to be the mineral bustamite, later analysis showed this to be a new species. We picked through the original lot, and this piece was by and far the best available. Nothing else was close to this in quality. That does not mean other pieces have not surfaced in South Africa, or still are in collections in South Africa that are equal or better, but we have not seen them. Beautiful lustrous pink lathlike crystals to 2.5 cm in size are covering the top of a 10.0 x 7.0 x 3.5 cm matrix. This is in perfect condition. Comes with a custom display base. Photo by Jeff Scovil.
Size: 10.0 x 7.0 x 3.5 cm (cabinet)
