Marcasite
specimen number:
2063445
location:
Brochterbeck quarry, Tecklenburg, Steinfurt, Munster, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany
description: Located in the Teutoburg Forest region of North Rhine-Westphalia, the abandoned Brochterbeck quarry near Tecklenburg exposes sedimentary strata traditionally worked for local stone and aggregate production. The geology of the area is characterized by Cretaceous-aged limestone and associated sedimentary formations shaped by regional tectonic folding and faulting along the Munsterland basin margins. Industrial excavation at the site eventually ceased, transforming the old workings into a protected nature reserve and a restricted zone for commercial activities. Despite restricted access, the quarry gained minor local recognition among regional mineral collectors and hobbyists for yielding sulfide specimens, particularly crystallized forms of iron-bearing phases found within the carbonate host rock.
Bright sharp golden crystals of marcasite and groupings to 1.0 cm in size across the top of matrix. The entire cluster measures 4.5 x 1.5 x 1.2 cm in size. In good condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
