Classic German specimen, one full side of this matrix is covered by lustrous prismatic black crystals of manganite measuring to 0.5 cm in length. Masses of white barite are present. In good condition. The specimen comes with two previous labels, one from the collection of Ray DeMark. The other label comes from the A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum, the specimen is ex L.L. Hubbard.

The geology of Ilfeld in the Harz region of Germany features complex veins cutting through older sedimentary and volcanic rock formations, hosting rich mineral deposits that include barite, calcite, and the primary manganese ore known as manganite. Mining operations in the area historically targeted these hydrothermal vein systems for industrial metal extraction, gaining global renown among geologists and collectors for producing some of the largest, most structurally perfect prismatic manganite crystal specimens ever discovered.
