Malachite
specimen number:
2062836
location:
Kolwezi, Mutshatsha, Lualaba, DR Congo
description: Located within the western part of the Central African Copperbelt, Kolwezi features complex neoproterozoic sedimentary rock formations that host some of the world's richest concentrations of copper and cobalt, alongside associated supergene alteration zones containing diverse secondary mineral assemblages. Indigenous populations engaged in small-scale metal extraction and smelting long before the arrival of European prospectors. Modern industrial mining began in earnest during the colonial era in the early twentieth century, expanding rapidly with the establishment of major mining settlements and large-scale open-pit operations that continue to drive global mineral production today.
Velvety green grouping of crystallized stalactitic malachite. In good condition.
