location:
Laurel Hill, Secaucus, Hudson Co., New Jersey, USA
description: Laurel Hill, also known historically as Snake Hill, in Secaucus, New Jersey, is a prominent intrusive diabase rock formation rising out of the Hackensack Meadowlands as an offshoot of the nearby Palisades Sill. Over the centuries, the site evolved from early Dutch settlement accounts through hosting various county institutions to extensive commercial quarrying operations that heavily altered the landscape before closing in the late twentieth century. Mineral collectors and geologists heavily prized the locality for its unique fault and vein systems within the trap rock, which yielded exceptional, sharply formed black crystals of magnetite alongside numerous other rare secondary mineral species.
Sharp lustrous black octahedral crystals of magnetite to 0.6 cm in size on matrix. In good condition with very minimal micro-damage present. Nice thumbnail for this New Jersey classic.
Size: 3.0 x 2.0 x 1.2 cm (thumbnail)
