Lorenzenite with Selsurtite
specimen number:
2062964
location:
Selsurt Mtn, Lovozersky, Murmansk Oblast, Russia
description: Selsurt Mountain is located within the large alkaline Lovozero massif on the Kola Peninsula of Russia, an area characterized by complex layered intrusive rocks formed through protracted magmatic processes rich in rare elements. While not a commercial mining district, this remote arctic terrain is world-renowned among mineral collectors and researchers for its diverse pegmatites and unique accessory phases. The locality is famous for yielding exceptional specimens of lorenzenite, a dark brown to black titanium-bearing silicate typically found as prismatic crystals embedded in alkaline matrices. Additionally, Selsurt Mountain serves as the type locality for selsurtite, a rare brownish-red to reddish-orange member of the eudialyte group that occurs as distinct crystals within the local feldspar and aegirine rocks.
A sharp double terminated crystal of lorenzenite 2.0 cm in length set up on matrix. Within this matrix are grains of light colored selsurite and needlelike black aegirine crystals. In great condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 4.0 x 3.0 x 2.5 cm (miniature)
Collection: Ray DeMark
