Levyne-Ca
specimen number:
2354046
location:
Beech Creek Quarry, Grant Co., Oregon, USA
description: Located near Mount Vernon in Grant County, Oregon, the Beech Creek Quarry is embedded within vesicular Miocene basalt flows that host rich assemblages of zeolite minerals. Originally operated during the 1960s by the U.S. Forest Service for road construction material, the site quickly became a famous collecting spot after amateur and professional mineralogists discovered gas pockets lined with well-formed crystals. The quarry is especially noted among collectors for producing fine specimens of levyne-Ca, a calcium-dominant zeolite species that typically forms thin, white bladed hexagonal crystals or tabular aggregates, often featuring distinctive fibrous overgrowths of related zeolites.
An excellent example for the species from a classic locality, in the center of this basalt matrix is an open pocket 2.3 x 1.7 cm in size, this almost completely lined with pleading white crystals measuring to 0.6 cm in size. This is in good condition. Collected by Chuck Trantham in August, 1965.
