Lazulite (Figured)
specimen number:
2063436
location:
Graves Mtn., Lincoln Co., Georgia, USA
description: Located in Lincoln County, Georgia, Graves Mountain is a prominent monadnock formed by a remnant of metamorphosed quartzite, famous for its world-class kyanite and rutile mineralization. Formed through intense regional metamorphism and hydrothermal alteration during the Paleozoic era, the site became an important mining location when kyanite was extracted commercially for high-temperature refractory ceramics from the 1930s through the 1980s. Following the end of commercial operations, the site gained widespread fame among mineral collectors for producing extraordinary, highly lustrous, dark metallic rutile crystals, iridescent hematite coating quartz, and large blue kyanite blades, making it one of the most celebrated mineral collecting localities in the eastern United States.
Quite large sharp light blue double terminated crystal of lazulite measuring 2.6 x 1.5 x 1.0 cm in size embedded up on matrix. This is in very good condition. An excellent large matrix example for the species in this classic locality. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark. He collected the piece in November, 1968. The specimen is figured in an issue of The Mineralogical Record, May, June, 2022.
Size: 8.0 x 7.0 x 2.5 cm (small-cabinet)
