Kyanite
specimen number:
9771515
location:
Buncombe Co., North Carolina, USA
description: Buncombe County, located in the Blue Ridge Province of the Southern Appalachian Mountains, features complex regional geology dominated by Precambrian metamorphic and gneissic rock formations shaped by ancient tectonic collisions. While the region lacks major industrial mining or large-scale quarrying operations for kyanite, mineral collectors occasionally discover specimens of blue, bladed kyanite crystals embedded within quartz veins and schistose rock units across local upland areas. Historically, local activity has remained centered on small-scale prospecting and recreational mineral collecting rather than commercial resource extraction.
An attractive lustrous crystal of kyanite with little attached matrix. This is bicolored, part of the crystal he deep blue, the other party much lighter blue. In good condition. Collected in 1996.
