Junitoite
specimen number:
2354300
location:
Christmas Mine, Gila Co., Arizona, USA
description: Colorless lath like crystals of junitoite measuring to 0.6 cm in length on matrix with sparkling micro crystals of apophyllite. Good example for the species. The Christmas Mine in Gila County, Arizona, located within the Dripping Spring Mountains, is a prominent copper skarn deposit discovered in the 1880s and operated intermittently until the late twentieth century, yielding significant copper ore through underground mining methods. Geologically, the site features Paleozoic limestone and sedimentary layers intruded by granodiorite stocks, creating an ideal environment for complex contact metasomatism and rich skarn mineral assemblages. For mineral collectors and researchers, the mine is exceptionally famous as the type locality for junitoite, a rare hydrated calcium zinc silicate mineral. Junitoite typically forms as delicate, transparent to translucent, colorless or pale platy crystal clusters within fractures and pockets intersecting zinc-rich pods, resulting from the retrograde metamorphism and oxidation of the tactite ores.
