Jahnsite with Hureaulite

location:
White Elephant Mine, Pringle, South Dakota, USA
description: The White Elephant Mine, located near Pringle in Custer County, South Dakota, is situated within a classic Proterozoic zoned granitic pegmatite in the Black Hills mineral district. Originally opened as an open-pit operation for bulk industrial feldspar, beryl, and quartz, the mine became famous among mineralogists and collectors for its diverse assemblage of rare secondary phosphate minerals resulting from the hydrothermal alteration of primary triphylite-lithiophilite. Notably, in 1974, the site served as the co-type locality where the new manganese iron hydrated phosphate mineral, jahnsite, was first described by Paul B. Moore. Micro-mount collectors highly seek specimens of jahnsite from this locality for their distinct, lustrous, yellow-brown to reddish-brown prismatic crystals perched in small cavities of the altered pegmatite matrix.
Quite rich micro crystallized reddish-brown jahnsite on matrix with minor hureaulite. Very good example for the species.
