Iodargyrite with Chloragyrite
specimen number:
2354225
location:
Proprietary Mine, Broken Hill, NSW, Australia
description: The Proprietary Mine at Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia, exploits one of the largest and most concentrated metamorphosed massive sulfide ore bodies in the world, hosted within Proterozoic gneisses and schists that underwent intense folding and high-grade metamorphism. Originally discovered in the late 19th century, the massive surface outcrop sparked a historic mining boom that led to the formation of the Broken Hill Proprietary Company (BHP). The mine targeted an exceptionally rich zone containing massive amounts of silver, lead, and zinc. Deep weathering and oxidation of the upper lodes created a famous zone of secondary minerals that has made the site legendary among mineral collectors and museums worldwide for yielding spectacular crystalline specimens.
Tiny micro crystals of iodargyrite scattered throughout matrix with waxy yellow chlorargyrite.
