The Champion Mine in Marquette County, Michigan, was a prominent underground iron ore mine that began operations around 1867 and continued intermittently before closing permanently in 1966. Geologically, the deposit is situated within the Marquette Iron Range, where high-grade specular hematite and magnetite ores were formed within Precambrian-aged metasedimentary rock formations, specifically the Negaunee Iron Formation, which underwent extensive folding and hydrothermal alteration to concentrate the rich iron deposits.
