Hydroxyapophyllite-K with Prehnite
specimen number:
2063183
location:
Chantilly Quarry, Loudoun Co., Virginia, USA
description: The Chantilly Quarry in Loudoun County, Virginia, extracts dense, dark diabase rock from the Mesozoic-aged Culpeper Basin for use as construction aggregate and road material. Geologically, the quarry exposes intrusive diabase sills and dikes that formed during the rifting of the supercontinent Pangea. While primarily operated for commercial stone mining, the quarry has historically gained fame among mineral collectors for cavities containing well-formed crystals of secondary minerals such as apophyllite and prehnite.
Colorless lustrous blocky pseudo-cubic crystals of hydroxyapophyllite-k slightly translucent and measuring to 1.5 cm on edge across the top of a matrix covered by light green slightly translucent lustrous crystallized prehnite. In good condition with very minimal damage present. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark. He acquired the piece through Norman Martin who collected the piece in the 1970s.
Size: 8.5 x 5.0 x 1.5 cm (small-cabinet)
Collection: Ray DeMark
