Hummerite

specimen number:
2351026

location:
Hummer Mine, Montrose Co., Colorado, USA

description:
Good example for the species with brilliant orange coatings and micro crystalline hummerite across the top of matrix. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Jack Nieburger.

Located in the Paradox Valley of Montrose County, Colorado, the Hummer Mine is a small historic vanadium and uranium mine set within the sedimentary sandstones of the Colorado Plateau. Historically worked for its strategic metal ore, the mine gained scientific renown as the type locality for hummerite, a rare secondary vanadium-bearing mineral that forms bright orange crystal platings, veinlets, and efflorescent crusts on the host sandstone surfaces through the oxidation and weathering of primary ore minerals.
