Heulandite
specimen number:
2354007
location:
Skookumchuck Dam, Thurston Co., Washington, USA
description: Located in Thurston County, Washington, the area near the Skookumchuck Dam is renowned among rockhounds for its volcanic geology, which features Tertiary basalt flows, tuffs, and sedimentary beds ideal for mineral deposition. During construction of the dam and reservoir in the late 1960s, extensive excavation exposed rich hydrothermal deposits, making the site famous for producing high-quality petrified wood, colorful agates, jaspers, and zeolite minerals. Although access is now heavily restricted due to private land ownership and dam operations, collecting history in the region remains legendary among local collectors who historically gathered prized specimens of carnelian agate and fossilized wood from the river drainage and exposed road cuts.
Light pink sparkling pearly crystals of heulandite to 0.3 cm in size across the top of matrix. This is in very good condition. Collected by Chuck Trantham.
