Hematite
specimen number:
9892154
location:
Rio Marina, Elba, Tuscany, Italy
description: The Rio Marina district on the island of Elba, Italy, features ancient iron ore deposits formed through complex hydrothermal replacement and metasomatic processes within carbonate and schist host rocks. Mining dates back to Etruscan and Roman times, making it one of the oldest and most historically significant mining centers in the Mediterranean. Artisanal and industrial extraction over the centuries exposed spectacular mineral pockets. Rio Marina hematite is globally celebrated by collectors for its brilliant metallic luster, characteristic thin tabular crystal forms known as specularite, and frequent aesthetic associations with golden pyrite cubes.
Classic Italian specimen with brilliant lustrous metallic crystals of hematite measuring to 3.2 cm in size covering the front of matrix. Very slight damage present, still in good condition.
