Harmotome with Fluorpophyllite
specimen number:
2063029
location:
Korsnas Lead Mine, Korsnas, Ostrobothnia, Finland
description: The Korsnas Lead Mine in Ostrobothnia, Finland, is situated within a distinct north-south trending fault and fracture zone hosted by Svecofennian rocks, featuring a mineralized vein system rich in coarse-grained calcite, feldspar, diopside, and associated accessory minerals. Mining history at the site spans active operations from 1959 to 1972, during which underground extraction yielded significant quantities of lead ore alongside accessory rare earth bearing materials. Although the original lead operations were eventually exhausted and closed, the historic mine and its surrounding tailings have more recently drawn renewed exploration interest for critical technology and rare earth element resources.
Blocky colorless crystals of harmotome measuring to 0.6 cm in size across both sides of this matrix with yellow green crystalline fluorapophyllite. In good condition. Classic material for the species and locality. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 4.0 x 3.5 x 1.0 cm (miniature)
