Gypsum

specimen number:
2102482

location:
Walworth Quarry, Wayne Co., New York, USA

description:
A large colorless crystallized and cleavage grouping of gemmy gypsum set on a small amount of matrix. A little scuffing present as seen, still a choice large example for the species and locality.

The Walworth Quarry, operated by Dolomite Products (The Dolomite Group) in Wayne County, New York, is an active industrial mineral quarry that does not have a public closing date. Geologically, the quarry works within stromatolite-bearing Silurian dolostone, where mineralization occurs near the surface of the bedrock. The ancient stromatolites provided protective vugs and cavities that allowed low-temperature hydrothermal solutions to precipitate collectible mineral specimens, most notably exceptionally clear fluorite, golden sphalerite, dolomite, calcite, and gypsum.
