Grossular
specimen number:
2062963
location:
Jeffrey Mine, Val-des-Sources, Les Sources RCM, Estrie, Quebec, Canada
description: The geology of the Jeffrey Mine in Val-des-Sources, Quebec, is characterized by an extensive ultramafic ophiolite body containing altered peridotite and serpentinite host rocks, which formed the basis for major mineral growth. Discovered in the late nineteenth century, the site evolved into one of the largest open-pit asbestos producers in the world, operated heavily by Johns-Manville for much of the twentieth century. Beyond its commercial industrial output, the mine gained international fame among mineral collectors and museums for yielding world-class specimen crystals, including rare garnets, vesuvianite, and other distinct silicate phases within its fault zones and cavities. Operations expanded massively over decades, directly shaping the surrounding community until global health concerns and market shifts forced its permanent closure in 2012.
Classic Canadian specimen with glassy gemmy cinnamon colored crystals of grossular measuring to 1.5 cm in size across both sides of this matrix. In good condition as seen. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark. His label notes that the specimen was collected by Mike Ridding around the year 1976.
Size: 4.0 x 3.2 x 2.0 cm (miniature)
