Beautiful deep red glassy translucent lustrous crystals of grossular to 0.5 cm in size across matrix. This is in very good condition as seen. This is the variety of the species often referred to as hessonite. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.

Nestled in the Western Alps of Piedmont, Italy, the Ala Valley within the Lanzo Valleys features complex ophiolitic and metamorphic geology defined by ocean floor alteration and subduction tectonics that produced unique rodingite dikes. While the region has seen small scale historic mineral prospecting rather than large industrial excavation, it is world famous among mineralogists and collectors for yielding pristine, sharp crystal specimens of grossular, a calcium aluminum silicate member of the garnet family.
