Goslarite
specimen number:
9302415
location:
Rammelsberg, Harz, Lower-Saxony, Germany
description: Located near Goslar in the Harz Mountains of Lower Saxony, Germany, Rammelsberg is home to a world-famous, ancient ore deposit formed over 380 million years ago through submarine hydrothermal activity. The locality has a rich mining history spanning over 1,000 years, from early medieval times until operations permanently ceased in 1988, making it a UNESCO World Heritage site today. Rammelsberg is the type locality for goslarite, a secondary mineral formed by the oxidation and alteration of primary sulfide ores within damp mine workings. Mineral collectors and historians value goslarite specimens from this site for their historical significance, delicate needle-like or fibrous crystal formations, and soft white to pale green colors.
From the type locality for the species, this is an outstanding large botryoidal crystallized cluster of goslarite. This is in excellent condition all around and is a floater with no points of attachment.
