Gmelinite after Chabazite
specimen number:
2354028
location:
Pinnacle Rocks, Five Islands, Nova Scotia, Canada
description: Located along the Minas Basin in the Bay of Fundy, Pinnacle Rocks at Five Islands, Nova Scotia, is a classic Canadian mineral locality famed for its Jurassic-age basalt cliffs and sea stacks. Constant coastal erosion by extreme tides exposes rich zeolitic cavities within the fracture zones of the North Mountain Basalt, where collectors have found outstanding pseudomorphs of gmelinite after chabazite since the nineteenth century. These striking, peach- to salmon-pink crystals preserve the distinct rhombohedral form of chabazite while displaying the altered micro-surface and internal structure of gmelinite, making Five Islands an iconic destination for zeolite collectors worldwide.
Attractive pseudomorph specimen with blocky crystals of what were once chabazite to 1.5 cm in size, these now replaced by gmelinite and mostly covering the top of matrix. In excellent condition.
