Getchellite
specimen number:
2354218
location:
Getchell Mine, Humboldt Co., Nevada, USA
description: Located in the Potosi Mining District of Humboldt County, Nevada, the Getchell Mine is a renowned Carlin-type gold deposit hosted within folded Paleozoic sedimentary rocks along the Getchell structural fault zone, where hydrothermal fluids rich in arsenic and sulfur altered the host rock and deposited microscopic gold. Mining operations began underground in the 1930s before transitioning to large-scale open-pit mining in the late 20th century, yielding substantial gold production. The deposit is globally famous among mineral collectors and researchers as the type locality for getchellite, a rare arsenic antimony sulfosalt mineral that forms brilliant, deep red crystal aggregates in the altered, mercury-bearing siliceous ore zones.
Very rich sparkling red micaceous crystalline getchellite across the top of this orpiment matrix. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Jack Nieburger.
