Gaspeite
specimen number:
2354116
location:
132 North Deposit, Widgiemooltha, Western Australia, Australia
description: Located within the Yilgarn Craton of Western Australia, the 132 North deposit at Widgiemooltha is a komatiite-hosted nickel sulfide orebody that began open-pit mining operations in 1990. The deposit is internationally renowned for hosting the greatest diversity of secondary nickel minerals in the world, formed through the deep weathering and alteration of primary sulfide minerals within ultramafic host rocks. Among these remarkable occurrences is gaspeite, a rare nickel carbonate mineral that forms striking apple-green veins and tiny vug crystals. Because of its unusual vibrancy and scarcity, specimens from this site became highly prized by mineral collectors and lapidary artisans worldwide following the active mining phase.
Beautiful apple green botryoidal crystallized gaspeite with very little attached matrix. In excellent condition. Minor gypsum and paratacamite present as well. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Eric Laskowski.
