Fluorite with Quartz
specimen number:
2063594
location:
Fahl, Todtnau, Lorrach, Freiburg, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany
description: Located near Todtnau in the Lorrach district of the southern Black Forest, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany, the Fahl area is renowned for its complex hydrothermal vein deposits embedded within Variscan granitic basement rocks and high-grade metamorphic gneiss. Silver-bearing lead and zinc ore mining in the Fahl district dates back to the Middle Ages, with peak historical activity occurring between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries as miners extracted galena, tetrahedrite, and sphalerite from vein fissures. Modern mineral collectors value the locality for its historic heritage and classic Black Forest specimens, including well-formed crystals of baryte, fluorite, quartz, and secondary copper minerals preserved in local museum collections and historic dumps.
Colorless crystallized quartz, the type known as chalcedony, across the top of matrix. This is hosting numerous small purple crystals of fluorite measuring to 0.3 cm in size. In good condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
